India head coach Gautam Gambhir has opened up about the team’s disappointing performance after suffering their biggest-ever defeat in T20 internationals against England. The loss has raised questions about India’s current team changes, player selection, and the challenges of building a new T20 setup after a successful World Cup campaign.
India were defeated by England by 125 runs in the third T20I at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. The defeat gave England a 2-0 lead in the five-match series and left India needing a win in the next match to stay alive in the contest.
Gambhir admitted that adapting to different conditions is still an area where the Indian team needs improvement. He explained that players need to understand match situations better and make smarter decisions depending on the conditions instead of following an aggressive approach throughout the innings.
According to Gambhir, small details can have a major impact in T20 cricket. Factors like wind direction, ground size, and pitch conditions can completely change the way a team should approach a match.
“I think that it is important to assess the conditions, no doubt about that. But it is also important to know how to read the game,” Gambhir said.

Gambhir Points Towards Batting Mistakes
One of the main concerns highlighted by Gambhir was India’s batting strategy. He felt that the team’s middle order, especially experienced players, needed to understand when to attack and when to build the innings.
The coach said that when every batter tries to play a high-risk, high-reward game, the team can lose control of the situation.
“When everyone in a batting line-up starts playing high risk, high reward, sometimes these things can happen,” Gambhir explained.
He pointed out that during India’s successful ICC Men’s T20 World Cup campaign, the team had a better balance. While the top three batters played aggressively, the middle order provided stability and helped the team recover whenever required.
During the World Cup, India’s top order was performing strongly, allowing them to take an attacking approach. However, players at No. 4 and No. 5 were also capable of controlling the innings and playing according to the situation.
Gambhir believes that this balance was missing during the Trent Bridge defeat.
“We did that during the World Cup as well. Our top three were firing and we wanted to play that high risk, high reward, but then we had Nos. 4 or 5 who were still able to build the innings and probably anchor the innings as well,” he said.
India Going Through a Team Reset
Gambhir also explained that India’s recent struggles are partly because the team is going through a rebuilding phase after a dominant period.
Before their recent defeats, India had remained unbeaten in 16 consecutive series or tournaments, ending with their successful T20 World Cup title defence. However, several important changes have taken place since that tournament.
The current team has a different combination compared to the side that played the World Cup final. Gambhir highlighted that there have been changes in leadership, opening combinations, and the absence of key players like Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah.
He said that changes require time and players need opportunities to develop, especially when they are facing strong international teams like England.
“When you go for that reset, it takes a bit of time,” Gambhir said.
He also mentioned the inclusion of young players in the squad. A 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been given an opportunity at the top of the order, while Prince Yadav is playing only his second T20 international. Harshit Rana is also returning after recovering from an injury.
Gambhir accepted that results are important in international cricket, but he believes the team also needs patience during this transition period.
“Sometimes you give players time to develop. England is a high-quality side. If you put players in against such teams, you have to give them time to develop,” he said.
Sanju Samson Receives Clarity Over His Exclusion
Another major talking point has been the absence of Sanju Samson from recent matches and his exclusion from India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe.
Samson was one of India’s biggest performers during the T20 World Cup. He was named Player of the Tournament after scoring 97 not out, 89, and 89 in the final three matches of the competition.
He also had an impressive IPL season, scoring two centuries and becoming the leading run-scorer for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2026.

“The clarity that should have been given to Sanju Samson, he has got from me,” Gambhir said.
He added that the conversation between a coach and player remains private, but confirmed that Samson’s World Cup contribution is highly respected.
Gambhir also explained that selection decisions are based on current form and team requirements. He said there is no permanent rule preventing Samson from returning to the playing XI.
“Everyone needs to earn their place. Everyone needs to earn the right to play for India,” he said.
Why Samson Was Left Out of Zimbabwe Series
Samson’s omission from the Zimbabwe T20I squad created a debate among fans because of his previous performances. However, reports suggested that the selectors viewed the Zimbabwe series as an opportunity to give another wicketkeeper-batter a chance.
The selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar reportedly wanted to provide exposure to Prabhsimran Singh, who has impressed with his T20 performances, especially during recent IPL seasons with Punjab Kings.
Prabhsimran has also represented India A and was included as the second wicketkeeper-batter in the squad behind Ishan Kishan.
The decision was not officially explained by the BCCI, leaving fans questioning whether Samson was dropped, rested, or unavailable. However, his current poor run of scores was reportedly not the main reason behind his exclusion from the Zimbabwe tour.
