Lucknow Super Giants finally gave their home fans something to celebrate after a dominant seven-wicket win over Chennai Super Kings in Lucknow. Mitchell Marsh played one of the most destructive knocks of IPL 2026, smashing 90 runs from just 38 balls and putting CSK’s playoff hopes under serious pressure.
Even though the win was not enough to lift LSG from the bottom of the points table, it pushed CSK down from fifth to sixth place. Rajasthan Royals moved ahead of Chennai on net run-rate and still have one game in hand.
Marsh Turns the Chase Into a One-Man Show
Chasing 188 on a pitch that was not easy for batting, Marsh attacked from the very beginning and completely changed the match inside the powerplay itself.
Lucknow scored 86 runs in the first six overs, and Marsh alone made 56 of them. At the halfway point of the chase, LSG’s chances of winning were below 40%, but Marsh’s fearless hitting quickly changed everything.
He missed out on a century by just ten runs, but by then the damage had already been done. Nicholas Pooran later finished the chase in style as LSG reached the target with 20 balls remaining.
Akash Singh Shines Against Former Team
Before Marsh’s fireworks, young pacer Akash Singh played a huge role in restricting CSK to 187.
Playing his first match of the season, Akash produced the best IPL figures of his career with 3 wickets for 26 runs in four overs. Facing his former team, he used the bounce of the red-soil Ekana pitch brilliantly and troubled batters with hard-length deliveries.
He dismissed Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel during the power play and celebrated each wicket by pulling out a note from his pocket that read:
“#Akki on fire – Akash knows how to take wickets in a T20 game.”
His disciplined bowling helped LSG keep CSK down to 37 for 2 after six overs.

Kartik Sharma Keeps CSK Alive
CSK were struggling at 52 for 3 when youngster Kartik Sharma stepped in and rebuilt the innings along with Dewald Brevis.
Kartik looked confident from the start and impressed with both his back-foot and front-foot shots. He attacked Shahbaz Ahmed strongly, scoring 30 runs from just 15 balls against the spinner.
He also showed courage against high pace. Facing Mayank Yadav’s 144kph delivery, Kartik backed away and sliced the ball past point for four.
The young batter reached his half-century in 35 balls and celebrated with a finger-on-the-lips gesture that silenced the crowd for a moment. He finally got out for an impressive 71 from 42 balls when a bigger score looked possible.
Brevis supported him with a quick 25 off 16 balls.
Shivam Dube Provides Late Boost
Shivam Dube struggled early in his innings and managed only one boundary from his first 11 balls. But he finished strongly by hitting two sixes and two fours in his final four deliveries.
Dube remained unbeaten on 32 from 16 balls while Prashant Veer added 13 not out.
LSG also suffered a slow over-rate penalty in the final over, which meant they could only keep four fielders outside the circle. Prince Yadav failed to handle the pressure and leaked 23 runs in the over, helping CSK reach 187.
Marsh Attacks Every Bowler
Marsh showed his intentions immediately in the chase. He walked down the track to Mukesh Choudhary in the opening over and hit him for boundaries. Mukesh gave away 15 runs and was quickly removed from the attack.
Anshul Kamboj also had a tough evening. Marsh attacked him mercilessly in the fifth over, smashing four sixes and a four.
Even Spencer Johnson, making his CSK debut, could not stop Marsh, who hit him for three fours and a six in one over.
Without the injured all-rounder Jamie Overton in the middle overs, CSK lacked control with the ball. Marsh kept using his feet brilliantly and never allowed the bowlers to settle.
Josh Inglis played the supporting role with 36 off 32 balls during the massive 135-run opening stand.
Pooran Finishes the Job
CSK finally broke the opening partnership in the 12th over when Mukesh Choudhary dismissed Inglis with a slower ball.
Soon after, Marsh was unlucky to get run out at the non-striker’s end after Mukesh deflected a shot from Pooran onto the stumps.
Spencer Johnson briefly gave CSK hope by dismissing Abdul Samad, but Pooran quickly ended the contest. He smashed four consecutive sixes off Kamboj and sealed the win comfortably for LSG.
Kamboj ended with very expensive figures of 0 for 63 in 2.4 overs.

Why Marsh Was Almost Unstoppable
The innings was not only about power. Marsh’s smart movement at the crease made life extremely difficult for CSK’s bowlers.
The Lucknow pitch offered steep bounce and some sideways movement, making batting challenging for most players. Josh Inglis later admitted that he felt like he was “batting with a stump” because timing was not easy.
But Marsh looked completely comfortable on the surface.
The Australian batter repeatedly stepped out against fast bowlers, forcing them to change their lengths. According to match data, Marsh scored 30 runs from just six balls while stepping out to pacers — the highest such tally in an IPL 2026 innings.
He attacked bowlers in every possible area:
- Pulling short balls over square leg
- Slapping good-length deliveries through the off side
- Lofting balls over cover
- Moving across to convert wide deliveries into scoring opportunities
His aggressive movement forced bowlers into mistakes again and again.
Michael Hussey Explains Marsh’s Mindset
CSK batting coach Michael Hussey later explained why Marsh was so difficult to bowl to on this pitch.
Hussey said Marsh understood that trying to bat safely on such a surface could actually become harder. Instead, Marsh decided to take risks early and force the bowlers under pressure.
According to Hussey, Marsh admitted that LSG’s top order had tried a similar aggressive approach earlier in the season but often lost wickets quickly inside the powerplay. This time, however, Marsh survived the early phase and completely took the game away from CSK.
Big Blow for CSK’s Playoff Race
The defeat could become very costly for the Chennai Super Kings in the playoff race. Their net run-rate took another hit, and with Rajasthan Royals moving above them, CSK now face extra pressure in their remaining matches.
For LSG, the season may still be difficult to rescue, but Marsh’s incredible innings reminded everyone why he remains one of the most dangerous T20 batters in world cricket, even at 34 years of age.
